Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQs

What if I do not have transportation?
Remember, ECI services are provided in a child’s natural environment such as your home, daycare, or grandma’s house.
How much do ECI services cost?
The following services are always provided at no cost to families (under cost share):

  • Developmental screenings, evaluation/assessment

  • Development of the Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP)

  • Service Coordination

  • Translation and interpretation services, if needed

  • Services for children with auditory and visual impairments who are eligible for services from ECI and local school districts

  • Services for children in foster care or in conservatorship of the state

Does my child’s physician have to make the referral to ECI?
No. Anyone can refer a child to ECI.
What is the process after my child is referred to ECI?
Within a few days of referral to ECI you will receive a call from ECI to schedule an appointment to gather more information regarding your family and your child’s needs. An evaluation or screening will follow where ECI will identify if your child is eligible to receive ECI services.
How do I know if my child needs to be referred to ECI?
See developmental milestones and eligibility criteria.
What if my child is over 3 years old?
If your child is 3 years or older, services are available through your local school district for children and young adults with a disability. A referral for assessment may be made. This may lead to individualized testing for children and young adults who may require specialized assistance and/or support services. To begin this process, contact the director of special education services for your local school district. The telephone number can be found in the white pages of the phone book.
What happens after my child is evaluated?
After the Evaluation and assessment, you will meet with staff and together write your family's plan for services. This individualized family service plan (IFSP) will describe the service your family will receive: when, where, how often the services will be delivered, who will deliver the services and who will pay for the services.
